A step-by-step guide on applying Eye Drops after surgery

Updated: Jan 6

It is very important to use eye drops correctly to heal from eye surgery. Follow this step-by-step guide to make sure you're doing it right and safely.

1. Clean your hands.

  • Why: To keep bacteria and other germs from entering your eyes.

  • How: Wash your hands well with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use a clean towel to dry your hands.

2. Shake the bottle of eye drops.

  • Why: Some medicines can settle, so shaking them ensures that the active ingredients are spread out evenly.

  • How: Carefully shake the bottle a few times, following any specific directions with your medicine.

3. Get the dropper ready.

  • Make sure the dropper is clean and ready to use.

  • How: Take off the cap without hitting the dropper's tip to keep it clean. If it's a drip you only use once, make sure the lid is on tight until needed.

4. Turn your head back

  • Why: This keeps the eye drops from running off your face and makes it easier for them to get to your eyes.

  • How: You can sit, stand, tilt your head back, or lie down flat.

5. Make a hole in the bottom of your eyelid.

  • Why: the pocket holds the drop until your eye can take it in.

To make a pocket, use your non-dominant hand to pull down your lower eyelid slowly.

6. Put the eye drops in

  • Why? Because if you use the drop correctly, it will stay clean in your eye.

Hold the bottle above your eye with your more substantial hand to do this. Take one drop and put it in the pocket you made. Do not put the tip of the bottle near your eye or eyelid.

7. Put your eye shut and press the corner

  • This keeps the drop from flowing out of the tear duct, meaning more medicine gets taken. Put your eye closed slowly and lightly press on the inside corner of your eye, close to your nose, for about one minute.

8. Do it again if you need to

  • Why: Some medicines need more than one drop, but you must wait a long time between drops.

  • How: If your doctor tells you to, wait about 5 minutes before putting a second drop in the same eye.

9. Wipe Off Extra

  • What's the point? Extra liquid can drip out, and you should keep the area around your eyes clean

  • How: Gently wipe away any extra eye drop fluid around your eye with a clean tissue.

10. Put the cap back on

  • Why: Keeping the bottle closed helps keep the drops clean and germs-free.

  • How: Put the cap back on the bottle tightly, ensuring that it does not touch the dropper's tip.

11. Keep the eye drops in the right way.

  • Why: Storing the medicine correctly keeps it working.

  • Where to store the eye drops: Wherever it says to, in a cool, dry place. Some might need to be kept cool.

12. Do it again: wash your hands once more.

  • Why: To get rid of any medicine that might still be on your hands. Just like before you put the drops on, wash with soap and water.

Some more tips:

  • Stick to the plan your doctor gives you. Please don't change the times that they tell you to

  • Look in the mirror. If it's hard for you to put drops on, looking in the mirror can help you aim better

  • Get help if you need it. Ask a friend or family member to help you if you're having difficulty.

If you follow these steps, you can put your eye drops on correctly, which will help you heal quickly after surgery.
