YAG Capsulotomy

YAG capsulotomy is a quick, painless laser procedure used to restore clear vision in patients who develop posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery. PCO occurs when the thin membrane behind the intraocular lens becomes cloudy, causing blurred vision. During the procedure, a YAG laser creates a small, precise opening in the cloudy membrane, allowing light to pass through and improving vision immediately. The procedure is non-invasive, takes only a few minutes, and requires no downtime, making it a safe and effective solution for PCO.

Treatment Process

Pre-Operative Consultation

Consultation and Assessment
Before the surgery, an ophthalmologist will evaluate your vision and confirm the diagnosis of PCO through a comprehensive eye exam. Your doctor will explain the procedure, potential benefits, risks, and answer any questions you may have.

Medication and Instructions
Based on your health, you may be requested to continue or discontinue certain medications. No major preparations are usually required.

Transportation and Support
Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure, as your vision might be temporarily blurry due to dilated pupils.

Treatment Process

Surgical Procedure

YAG capsulotomy is a quick and generally painless outpatient procedure.

Arrival and Preparation
You’ll arrive at our clinic, and a nurse will guide you through the preoperative steps. Eye drops will be administered to dilate your pupils for better visualisation of the lens and numb your eyes to ensure the procedure is painless.

The Procedure
You will sit comfortably at a slit-lamp machine (a specialised microscope). The ophthalmologist will focus a YAG laser precisely on the cloudy posterior capsule. The laser creates a small, circular opening in the capsule, allowing light to pass through and restoring clear vision.

Duration
The procedure typically takes 5–10 minutes and does not involve any incisions or stitches.

Post Surgery & Recovery

After YAG surgery, following postoperative instructions is crucial to ensure proper healing and the best outcome.

Vision Improvement
Most patients notice an improvement in vision within a few hours to a day. Mild floaters (small specks in vision) may appear but usually fade within a few days.

Medications
Anti-inflammatory eye drops may be prescribed to reduce inflammation or prevent swelling.

Activity Guidelines
You can usually return to normal activities immediately, but avoid rubbing your eyes or exposing them to irritants.

Follow-Up Appointments
A follow-up visit may be scheduled within a week to ensure proper healing and check intraocular pressure

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Might Want to Know Before Your Consultation

What is PCO?

Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) is a common condition that can occur after cataract surgery. PCO happens when the thin membrane (posterior capsule) behind the intraocular lens (IOL) becomes cloudy, leading to blurred or hazy vision, sometimes called a “secondary cataract”. PCO is not a cataract recurrence but rather a natural response of the eye as cells grow on the capsule over time.
